What to do after you are done with your Christmas tree?

When Christmas is over for the year, don’t throw away your Christmas tree!

If you didn’t know, real Christmas trees are actually more eco-friendly than fake Christmas trees because they are biodegradable.

While you can reuse fake Christmas trees for several seasons, eventually the plastic needles fall off and they’ll end up in the landfill. Since they can’t decompose, these plastic trees stick around forever.

Real trees can be composted into chips and wood mulch that can be used for landscaping, or as fertilizer for other plants.

Where to recycle your Christmas tree in Winnipeg?

You can recycle your tree at any of the depots listed here, or call 311 for more info. http://winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste/recycle/chip.stm. They are typically open from late December to late January.

Make sure you remove all the lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails, stands, and other non-organic decorative materials from the tree, including tree stands. Please don’t bring your artificial trees as they’re not accepted.

What happens when you drop off your Christmas tree at a recycling depot in Winnipeg?
